Lights On Well Being provide certified MHFA England Mental Health First Aid training courses. We’re helping to get businesses and individuals clued up, to help improve the mental health of the nation.

We currently run Mental Health First Aider, Mental Health Youth First Aider, Mental Health Aware (half day) and MHFA Refresher courses.

With an experienced and qualified team of MHFA trainers, Lights On pride ourselves on all having real lived experience. Our personal journies to a career in mental health have made us passionate to make a difference and to deliver a first-class level of training to mental health first aiders attending the course.

Mental Health First Aider - Mental Health England logo - MHFA

Mental Health First Aider

Train as a Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider®) and receive three years of certification, plus access to ongoing benefits.   

This Mental Health First Aid course is ideal for individuals who would like to become an MHFAider® to gain the knowledge and skills to spot signs of people experiencing poor mental health, be confident to start a conversation and signpost a person to appropriate support.​ 

In addition to the course, you will become part of the largest MHFAider® community in England, gaining access to resources, ongoing learning and 24/7 digital support through our MHFAider Support App®, to give you the tools and knowledge you need to carry out the role effectively and confidently, whether that be in your workplace, a volunteer role, or in the community.

Cost: £300 per person

As an MHFAider® you will be able to:

  • Recognise those that may be experiencing poor mental health and provide them with first-level support and early intervention
  • Encourage a person to identify and access sources of professional help and other supports
  • Practise active listening and empathy
  • Have a conversation with improved mental health literacy around language and stigma
  • Discuss the MHFAider® role in depth, including boundaries and confidentiality
  • Practise self-care
  • Know how to use the MHFAider Support App®
  • Know how to access a dedicated text service provided by Shout and ongoing learning opportunities with MHFA England
  • For in-person training, learners will be trained over two days, with an accredited MHFA England Instructor Member, covering 14 hours of content in total.
  • Our online courses are delivered over four half-day sessions, via the MHFA Learning Hub.
    Learning takes place through a mix of instructor-led training, group discussions, individual and group activities.
  • Each session builds on the previous, enabling the learner to gain confidence in supporting others with a Mental Health First Aid action plan.
  • We limit numbers to 16 people per course so that instructors can keep people safe and supported while they learn.
  • We strive for all of our learning content to be as accessible and inclusive as possible.

Everyone who completes this course gets:

  • A hard copy workbook to support their learning throughout the course 
  • A digital manual to refer to whenever they need it​ after completing the course 
  • A wallet-sized reference card with the Mental Health First Aid action plan
  • A digital MHFAider® certificate
  • Access to the MHFAider Support App® for three years 
  • Access to ongoing learning opportunities, resources and exclusive events ​ 
  • The opportunity to be part of the largest MHFAider® community in England

Mental Health Aware - Half Day

The Mental Health Aware course is available as either an online or face-to-face training session. The aim is to raise awareness of mental health, give a basic knowledge of common issues and help to support someone in distress.

This course raises awareness of mental health. It covers: 

  • What mental health is and how to challenge stigma
  • A basic knowledge of some common mental health issues
  • An introduction to looking after your own mental health and maintaining wellbeing
  • Confidence to support someone in distress or who may be experiencing a mental health issue

Cost: £125 per person

  • This is a half day course delivered either face-to-face or via online video conferencing
  • Learning takes place through a mix of presentations, group discussions and workshop activities
  • We limit numbers to 25 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn

Everyone who completes the course gets:

  • A certificate of attendance to say you are Mental Health Aware
  • A manual to refer to whenever you need it
  • A workbook including a helpful toolkit to support your own mental health
Mental Health First Aider Refresher course - Mental Health England logo - MHFA

Mental Health First Aider Refresher

The Mental Health Aware course is available as either an online or face-to-face training session.

We believe that mental health should be treated equally to physical health – and just like physical first aid, Mental Health First Aid training should be kept up to date.  

The four-hour MHFA Refresher course gives you the chance to:  

  • Renew your skills
  • Update your knowledge of mental health support
  • Practice applying the Mental Health First Aid action plan
  • Access three years of MHFAider® Support and Benefits

 

Please note that the MHFA Refresher is only for people who have completed an MHFAider® course.

Cost: £150 per person

  • This is a half day course delivered either face-to-face or online  
  • Learning takes place through a mix of presentations, group discussions and workshop activities
  • We limit numbers to 25 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn

Just like physical first aid, we recommend that MHFAiders® attend a Refresher course every three years.

Youth Mental Health First Aider - Mental Health England logo - MHFA

Youth Mental Health First Aider

This online course trains you as a Youth Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider®), giving you:

  • An in-depth understanding of young people’s mental health and factors that affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues 
  • Confidence to reassure and support a young person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening 
  • Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s through self-help sites, their place of learning, the NHS, or a mix – engaging with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate
  • Ability to support a young person with a long term mental health issue or disability to thrive
  • Tools to look after your own mental wellbeing ​

Cost: £300 per person

  • This is an online course delivered through the MHFA England Online Learning Hub
  • Learning takes place through four live training sessions spread across one to two weeks, with self-learning activities in between. See course structure section below for more detail 
  • Each session is built around a Youth Mental Health First Aid action plan
  • We limit numbers to 16 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn

Everyone who completes the course gets:

  • A certificate of attendance to say you are a Youth MHFAider®
  • A Youth MHFAider® manual to refer to whenever you need it
  • A workbook including some helpful tools to support your own mental health
